The expression of glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) was analyzed in astrocytes during the progression of AD in a triple-transgenic mouse model. A significant decrease of GS expression was found, which may underlie a gradual decline in the astrocyte-dependent glutamate-glutamine conversion pathway, which in turn may compromise glutamate homoeostasis, leading towards failures in synaptic connectivity with deficient cognition and memory.
