Für Hegel, bezieht sich der Begriff "Bildung" zum prägenden Selbst-Entwicklung des Geistes, als sozialen und historischen Prozesses angesehen. Bildung stellt ein Teil des Lebens-Prozesses einer spirituellen Einheit dar: eines Menschen, einer Gesellschaft, einer historischen Tradition. Bildung ist daher auch ein Prozess der Befreiung, in der die Freiheit des Geistes über die bloße Positivität von dem, was in der Natur gegeben ist, bestätigt wird.

For Hegel, the term 'Bildung' (cultivation) refers to the formative self-development of mind or spirit (Geist), regarded as a social and historical process. Bildung is part of the life process of a spiritual entity: a human being, a society, a historical tradition. Bildung is therefore also a process of liberation, in which the freedom of spirit is vindicated over the mere positivity of what is given in nature.
