Die Publikation fasst den Forschungsstand zur Wahrnehmung der Politik und Person Edvard Benešs vom Ersten Weltkrieg bis zur Gegenwart zusammen. Das Buch soll zur Versachlichung der Diskussion über Edvard Beneš und sein politisches Wirken beitragen, das in Deutschland oft auf die sogenannten Beneš-Dekrete und die Zwangsaussiedlung der deutschen Minderheit reduziert wird. Es geht nicht darum, das Bild von Beneš zu "saubern", damit ein vermeintlich hinter den verschiedenen Darstellungen verborgenes "wahres Gesicht" zum Vorschein kommt, sondern darum, den generell verkurzten und ausschnitthaften Charakter der unterschiedlichen Interpretationen und Wahrnehmungen zu unterstreichen. Der Hinweis auf ihre historische, politische, ideologische, konfessionelle oder nationale Bedingtheit stellt zugleich ihren jeweiligen Anspruch infrage, die einzig richtige Interpretation zu bieten. Das Buch soll zur erweiterten Betrachtung der Gestalt Edvard Benešs beitragen.

The book sums up the research about the changes of perceptions and images of Czechoslovak minister of Foreign Affairs and later President of Czechoslovakia, Edvard Beneš, since the First World War up to the present. Political actions of Beneš are often limited only to the so called Beneš´ decrees and the deportation of German minority. The aim of this publication is not to "clean" this Beneš´ image from what comes usually to the front and is supposedly hidden behind the various representations of "true face" but rather to focus on the general discourse shortcuts concerning the character and different interpretations of this politician. Nevertheless, making reference only to historical, political, ideological, religious or national conditions of his image as the only correct interpretation is considerably questioned. The book is intended to contribute to the further considerations of the Edvard Beneš´ image and work.
