Interpretation of religious and literary creations of poets belonging to the North Indian bhakti movement calls for a complex approach that integrates purely philological methods with a literary analysis of the oral traditions and broader context of historical developments. Author shows that the study of a particular utterance or idea expressed in a verse or distich should take into account several contextual levels: the poem, the anthology, the manuscript, the oral and performative character of the presentation and the broader, changing historical context and specific political and cultural milieu.
