Jako reakce na vznik průmyslové, technické společnosti 19. století se v jeho závěru objevil ideál návratu k přírodě. Raný turismus, charakteristický výlety a vycházkami do nedotčených koutů, se proti své podstatě časem stává jedním z krajinotvorných činitelů. Obecná idea turismu měla také svou nacionální tvář. Češi a Němci zpřístupňovali svému národu „svou“ krajinu, na mnoha místech se díky tomu národnostní řevnivost odrazila v infrastrukturní duplicitě, národní ideologie hrála roli také při lokaci a formě turistických objektů.

At the end of the 19th century, in response to the emergence of industrial and technical society, the ideal of a return to nature appeared. Morning hikes, typical trips and walks in unspoiled corners, became one of the factors shaping the landscape. The general idea of tourism also had its nationalist face. Czechs and Germans made "their" country available to their nations; in many places due to ethnic rivalries this was reflected in the duplication of infrastructure. National ideology also played a role in the location and form of hiking facilities.
