The lecture deals with two major issues concerning teaching Mandarin pronunciation. First, it introduces the facts of language – i.e. the objective properties of Mandarin sound structure (e.g. Mandarin is a tone language, it has both tone and stress, it is stress-timed, it has numerous diphthongs and triphthongs, difficult consonants etc.), resulting in various learning challenges. Second, the ways and methodologies to cope with these challenges are suggested.
