In order to assess the effectiveness of RMPs in mitigating the divertor power loading due to type I ELMs, experiments were performed on MAST using a set of 18 RMP coils. These have allowed ELM mitigation to be established in plasmas by applying fields with toroidal mode numbers n = 3, 4 or 6. Coincident with the effect of RMPs on the ELMs, for the first time, clear lobe structures have been observed to form near the x-point. These lobes, or manifold structures, have been predicted previously, and these observations are the first detailed measurements of their spatial structure in a range of plasma and RMP configurations. The appearance of the lobes is correlated with the effect of the RMPs on the plasma, which is manifest as a density pump out or an increase in ELM frequency, but form at a different ELM coil current threshold than for ELM mitigation.
