Study of plasma behaviour in tokamaks is of great importance for recent research in the field of magnetically confined fusion. The COMPASS tokamak, re-installed in Prague, should contribute to the worldwide effort to deepen the knowledge of precesses in the edge plasma. The diagnostic method based on Thomson scattering (TS) of laser radiation on plasma electrons, which design, commissioning and first results are the main subject of the presented thesis, is a key diagnostic to fulfil the scientific goal of the COMPASS tokamak. TS diagnostic is capable to provide characterisation of temporal evolution of both electron temperature and electron density profiles with high spatial resolution. Besides this work, author was involved in work on upgrades of TS systems on the TEXTOR tokamak (Germany) and on the MAST tokamak (Great Britain) and analysis and validation of the data measured on the TEXTOR tokamak.
