The chapter summaries the knowledge on the gate theory of pain that was strongly influencing the clinicians engaged in the treatment of pain during the past three dacades and motivated a new generation of scientists to study neuronal mechanisms of pain. The chapter summarizes the knowledge gained in the studies of the authors and published from other laboratories. Critically evaluates the experimental data on which the gate theory is based and highly appreciates its significance for the development of the new strategies in contemporary pain research
