The study examined stability of personality traits and selected aspects of self-concept between adolescence and adulthood. 83 people have participated in an ongoing longitudinal study beginning in 1961 (35 men and 48 women; in the age range of 38-45 years). Personality characteristics (extraversion and neuroticism) were measured at the age of 16 with Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) and in adulthood with Eysenck´s Personality Inventory (EPI). Self-esteem was determined at the age of 14 using Coopersmith´s Self-Assessment Questionnaire. General self-esteem and its components were compared with selected aspects of self-concept in adulthood (global self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-concept clarity). We found the predicted stability of extraversion and neuroticism during the life-span (correlation coefficients .39 and .44, for extraversion and neuroticism respectively). The results further showed that a general level of self-esteem in adolescence is related to self-concept clarity in adulthood rather than to self-esteem.
