    The crystal structure of Lu2Fe16.5Ru0.5 was studied by powder neutron diffraction. The Ru atoms were found to reside in 12k positions of the hexagonal Th2Ni17-type of structure. The magnetostriction study performed by high-field X-ray diffraction has shown that the metamagnetic antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition is accompanied by large linear strains mostly occurring along the easy magnetization axis of the compound, with the volume effect reaching out 2*10-3 in the field of 5 T at 10 K.
