Mono-colonization of mice with the Bet v 1 producing L. plantarum induced a Th1-biased immune response at the cellular level and reduced levels of Bet v 1 specific antibodies in sera, while wild type strain had no such effect. On the other hand, B. longum strain supressed cytokine production as well as specific antibody production. In vitro we showed different immunomodulatory properties of these two strains with different signalling through TLR receptors. We speculate that strong Th1 inducers like L. plantarum are able to modulate the systemic sensitization in vivo only when administrated together with the allergen. On the other hand, moderately stimulating probiotics such as B. longum ssp. longum are able to suppress the sensitization in a different way by inducing Treg bias
