White-nose syndrome, associated with fungal skin infection geomycosis, caused regional population collapse in bats in North America. Dermatohistopathology on two dead Myotis myotis bats with geomycosis from the Czech Republic had characteristics that resemble Geomyces destructans infection in bats confirmed with white-nose syndrome in US hibernacula. In addition, a live Myotis myotis specimen, biopsied for histopathology during hibernation in April 2011, had the typical fungal infection with the cupping erosion and invasion of muzzle skin that is diagnostic for white-nose syndrome, presence of conidiospores identical to G. destructans and was polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive for G. destructans. Our results show the presence of the white-nose syndrome in Europe based on histopathology.
