Magnetic shape memory effect is studied in the various Ni-Mn-Ga compounds mainly, but number of alloys combining martensitic and ferromagnetic transformation is higher. Among them Co-Ni-Al compounds have very interesting mechanical properties as high strengths and partially better resistance to cracking. Compare to Ni-Mn-Ga system the high-temperature state of Co-Ni-Al is complicated, there exist two phases: transformable, ordered (Co,Ni)Al and non-transformable precipitates of cubic cobalt solid solution. Other phase can be presented as well under selected condition. The preparation of the transformable “single-crystal” covers the preparation of single-crystalline matrix with the homogeneous fcc-cobalt precipitates distribution and subsequent annealing and quenching, which creates the metastable matrix state with nucleated precipitates arrays supporting the transformation under external stress.
