The European policy in biotechnology – particularly in agriculture – is dominated by ideology and superstition rather than by facts and experience. Therefore any activity contributing to the scientific view has a large economical and political impact. The meeting of IOBC/WPRS (International Organisation for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants – West Palaeartic Regional Section) "ECOLOGICAL IMPACT OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE" organized by the Biological centre of the Academy of Sciences of Czech republic in České Budějovice was such an important affair. Topics included:(1) Effects of GM crops on non-target organisms,(2) Effects of GM crops on soil ecosystems,(3) Gene flow from GM crops to wild relatives, (4) Invasiveness of GM crops into natural habitats, (5) Impacts of GM crops on pest and weed management (GM herbicide tolerant crops-GMHT),(6) Ecological benefits of GM crop cultivation.
