    The Ce-Zr mixed oxides have been examined as catalysts and supports of platinum and gold for total oxidation of ethanol and dichloromethane in air. The catalytic activity was compared to the industrial catalysts HHC-5557 (0.3 wt. % Pt + Pd) and VOC-1544 (3 – 6 wt. % Cu + Mn). It was found that Pt and Au increased the activity of Ce-Zr mixed oxides in the oxidation of ethanol. Platinum catalysts exhibited higher activity in comparison with corresponding gold catalysts. The Pt catalysts showed 90 % conversion of ethanol at about 150 oC while the Au samples showed that at about 210 oC. Furthermore, the efficiency of our most active platinum catalyst was higher comparing to that of industrial catalyst with the same metal loading, platinum-palladium supported on alumina. In the oxidation of ethanol, Au catalysts proved a better selectivity to CO2 than their platinum analogues, even with relatively low metal loading (0.3 wt. %).
