Within Cyprinidae, there are several specialized trophic groups characterized by their mouth morphology. One of them is formed by algae scrapers, which exclusively or dominantly feed on periphyton scraped from rocks and stones by a horny cutting edge on the lower jaw. In western part of Asia, the most abundant and species rich genus of algae scrapers is Capoeta, widely distributed from Anatolia and the Levant, through the Transcaucasia, the Tigris and Euphrates basin, most of Iran, east to Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Northern Afghanistan, and the upper reaches of the Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya. Twenty-one taxa of Capoeta from 57 populations across the whole range were analyzed to describe the mitochondrial phylogenetic structure of the genus. Cytochrome b sequence analyses support the monophyly of the genus and the presence of three main lineages: (i) the Capoeta trutta species complex, (ii) the Capoeta damascina species complex and a group of related species, and (iii) Capoeta capoeta and a group of related species. The diversity of the genus seems to be higher than expected. Several new species have been described during the last years and some more are suggested to exist based on the present results.
