Diabetes during pregnancy is a known risk factor for congenital malformations of the cardiovascular system and for neural tube defects. Using genome-wide expression prolifing, we have shown that the exposure is associated with deregulated gene expression in the developing embryo. Altered gene expression was also evident in the diabetic placenta, where a different repertoire of genes is misexpressed. This indicates that responses to metabolic imbalance employ specific pathways in tissue- and cell-type-specific manner, thus implicating multiple and distinct gene-environment interactions in birth defects risk under conditions of diabetic pregnancy.
