Trehalose, a nonreducing disaccharide of glucose, is synthetized as a stress responsive factor when cells are exposed to various stress conditions. In UVB-irradiated cornea the effect of trehalose was compared with eyes treated with buffered saline during irradiation. Results show that trehalose significantly reduced oxidative damage of the cornea induced by UVB rays. Trehalose reduced changes of corneal optics, suppressed apoptosis of corneal cells and decreased the formation of peroxynitrite, the reaction product between superoxide and nitric oxide.
