Kapitola představuje standardní čínštinu putonghua, jejíž výslovnost je založena na výslovnosti pekingského dialektu, jako jazyk se zcela jinou zvukovou stavbou než mají nám známé jazyky. Vysvětluje její tónový systém se čtyřmi lexikálními tóny, osvětluje tzv. "lehký tón", probírá jednotlivé kategorie souhlásek a samohlásek, přičemž popisuje jejich artikulaci na pozadí češtiny (úpravy textu pro českého čtenáře byly provedeny se svolením autora). Výklad je doplněn diagramy se sagitálními řezy. Probírají se rysy souvislé řeči jako je přízvuk, rytmické členění řeči a větné intonace. Čtenář je seznámen s úskalími, která jej při komunikaci čekají v případě nepřesného a nedostatečného zvládnutí zvukové stránky čínského jazyka.

The chapter introduces the standard Chinese (putonghua, Mandarin), whose pronunciation is based on the pronunciation of the Beijing dialect, as a language with substantially different sound structure as compared to the languages such as English or Czech. The tone system with four lexical tones is outlined as well as so called „neutral tone“. Particular categories of consonants and vowels are described; the description of their articulations is made in comparison with the sounds of Czech (the adaptations were made with the permission of the author). The diagrams with sagittal cuts are provided. The features of the fluent speech such as stress, rhythmical structure and sentence intonations are explained. The reader is warned against the problems in communication to be expected in case of unsatisfactory handling of the pronunciation.
