Presentation is based on current empirical sociological and psychological studies of citizenship. There is a relative consensus with regard to the concepts of “democratic personality” and “authoritarian personality”. However, empirical studies reveal a variety of other types of citizenship, mentalities, ideologies, which should be taken into account when we analyze democratic societies or societies which are in transition. Main mentalities discussed and illustrated are categorized with respect to: a) political development (totalitarian mentality, transformation mentality, democratic personality, post-modern mentality); b) political science view (parochials, authoritarians, subjects, liberal democrats); c) geography (international dimensions, national characters, East vs. West, red vs. blue areas of the USA); d) market and consumer orientation (non-conflicting ascetics vs. representatives of Generation Me or hedonistic nouveau rich) d) significant psychological and sociological dimensions (e.g., activity vs. passivity, hope vs. disillusion).
