We describe preparation of polished sections of macroporous solids, polished section imaging, and digital image processing and analysis. The principal feature of our procedure was the image transformation to the corresponding phase function, which represents a starting point in evaluation of statistical information about texture. This information can be used for three-dimensional stochastic reconstruction of porous solids. Among many possible combinations of image processing methods we found the following sequence to be the most appropriate for our aim: (i) non-linear (median) filtration, (ii) image segmentation based on maximisation of grey-level variance between foreground and background objects, (iii) removing of small clusters of pixels. As additional criteria to optimise computational parameters of the image processing methods, we applied independent textural information obtained using other experimental techniques, such as helium pycnometry, mercury porosimetry and low-temperature adsorption of krypton
