The successful solution of the /"Active Allothetic Place Avoidance/" (AAPA) task requires that a subject is able to separate room-bound orientation cues from arena-bound orientation cues. We tested whether rats are able to solve this task by means of an alternative strategy which does not require separation of the stimuli. The results showed that rats do not develop an alternative stragety during or after a standard training (1 week). However if they are pretrained for at least 3 weeks then an alternative strategy can develop. Thus if rats are trained in the AAPA task for a period longer than 3 weeks then it is necessary to consider this alternative strategy in the interpretation of results
