Archestratova Hédypatheia následuje formálně didaktický epos, v helénismu tolik populární. Helénistická společnost disponovala různými možnostmi, jak se věnovat požitkářství, a proto téma skladby, jídlo, nepřekvapuje. Kuchařské knihy byly v té době velmi rozšířenou četbou, zejména lidí vzdělaných. Překvapuje však spojení jídla s cestováním, díky čemuž se Archestratova báseň stává spíše geografickým průvodcem požitkáře. Je to zároveň soubor rad nouveau-riche, zbohatlíka, dosud nezkušeného v umění savoir-vivre.

Hedypatheia, composed by Archestratus of Gela, follows the formal pattern of a didactic epos, so popular in Hellenism. The Hellenistic society had enough opportunities for searching delight in all realms of life and therefore the theme of the poem, food, is not surprising. Several cookery-books were widely spread among educated people. What is unusual is associating food with travelling. Although Archestratos’ treatise is often considered to be a cookery-book, it is rather a guide – geographical, but also a collection of advice for a freshman, a novice bon-vivant, on the art of savoir-vivre.
