Fifty patients with primary knee osteoarthritis (OA) and 170 healthy controls were tested in order to determine whether the IL-1RN*2 allele could be a factor predisposing to development of knee OA in general and/or whether it could correlate with the markers of cartilage destruction, additionally affecting the course and severity of the disease. The results suggest that the IL-1RN*2 allele might represent a factor of susceptibility to OA generally; however, no correlation between this allele and the markers of cartilage degradation was found.
