Základním východiskem předkládané práce je otázka, jaké místo zaujímala válka a armáda od přelomu středověku a novověku do současnosti v českých dějinách, jimiž autoři pro účely práce rozumějí především dějiny české společnosti ve sféře sociální a kulturní. Obecně platnou tezi, že vojenství a válka jsou pevně ukotveny ve struktuře společnosti, se autoři pokouší doložit různorodou analýzou konkrétního případu českých dějin v dlouhém časovém rozpětí. Autoři postupovali formou sociohistorických črt, přičemž vycházeli jak z interpretace dosavadní literatury, tak z rozsáhlého studia původních archivních materiálů.

The basic issue to be searched in presented work is related to the question what was the position of war and army between the late middle ages till the present in Czech history. For the purpose of this work, the focus is primarily on the history of the Czech society in social and cultural sphere. On the basis of multi level analyses of specific cases in Czech history over the period of several centuries, the authors provide sufficient evidence for generally valid thesis that the warfare and a war are firmly rooted in the structure of society. In their writings the authors adopted the form of socio-historical sketches, based on interpretation of published relevant literature as well as thorough studies of archival sources.
