Článek se soustředí na první katolický překlad Nového zákona 20. století (evangelia r. 1909, apoštolář r. 1914, a řada dalších vydání, naposledy r. 1985), dílo Jana Ladislava Sýkory (1852–1928), profesora pražské teologické fakulty. Je zde ukázán kulturní a náboženský kontext, do něhož Sýkorův překlad přichází, je popsána geneze překladu a představena dobová odborná reflexe (autorská i recenzní). Charakteristika Sýkorova textu je podána především na pozadí tzv. Svatojanské bible (1888), do té doby oficiálního (a nejrozšířenějšího) katolického biblického překladu. Sýkorova práce měla zásadní vliv na rozvoj českého novozákonního překládání 20. století.

The article concentrates on the first Catholic translation of the New Testment in the 20th century (the Gospels in 1909, the rest of the New Testament books in 1914, and a number of other editions untill 1985), the work of Jan Ladislav Sýkora (1852–1928), Professor of Prague's Theological Faculty. Demonstrated are the cultural and religious context of Sýkora´s translation, the genesis of the translation is described as well as its contemporaneous scholarly reflexion (both by the author and his reviewers). The chracteristics of Sýkora's text is given on the background of the so-called Svatojanská bible (the Bible of St. John, 1888), which was the official and wide-spread Czech Catholic translation up to his time. Sýkora´s translation exercised a major influence on the development of Czech New Testament translating in the 20th century.
