he S-matrix approach is used to calculate both charged- and neutral-pion production in nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering near threshold. The irreducible pion-rescattering diagram, direct production mechanism, Delta isobars in intermediate states, and Z diagrams mediated by heavy isoscalar mesons are included in the calculation. For the NN distortions, we considered a realistic interaction, within the Bonn family of potentials, which describes the nucleonic inelasticities above the pion production energy threshold.
