The volume contains the texts submitted by authors of introductory lectures to all round table discussions in the course of the seminar, as well as those of contributed talks and posters. The seminar, 8th in sequence, is organized biannually since 1990 with the first turn in 1989 and is attended by representatives of selected groups leading in areas of the instrument science that concern charged particle beams and examination of surfaces.
