Námětem monografie je historické myšlení českého biologa a filosofa Emanuela Rádla (1873-1942) a jeho kritika českého dějepisectví v tzv. sporu o smysl českých dějin. Vysvětluje kulturně-historické pozadí tohoto sporu a charakterizuje základní pojmy historického myšlení s ním spojené (romantismus, historismus, pozitivismus). Následuje podrobný výklad a nástin hlavních tendencí vývoje sporu, zejm. jeho vědecko-metodologického rozměru a ideologicko-politických funkcí. Poslední část přináší zevrubnou charakteristiku Rádlovy dlouholeté kritiky principů českého dějepisectví a jeho vlastní metodologický rozvrh. Je zde též podán původní a neodvozený náhled na vývoj a charakter Rádlova filosofického myšlení s ohledem na českou společnost i na širší kontext evropského myšlení meziválečné doby.

Subject of the treatise is the historical thought of the Czech biologist and philosopher Emanuel Rádl (1873-1942) and the critique of Czech historiography in so-called discussions on the meaning of Czech history. He explains the cultural and historical background of these discussions and characterizes the basic ideas of historical though associated therewith (romanticism, historicism, positivism). A detailed commentary and overwie of the main tendenceies of the development of the discussions follow, in particular the scientific and methodological dimensions and ideological and political functions. The last section provides a comprehensive characterization of Rádl's many-year criticism of the principles of Czech historiography and its methodological break-down. It also provided an original and primary overview of the development and character of Rádl's philosophical thought with regard to Czech society and to the broader context of European thought in the inter-war years.
