Effective one-pot synthesis of 1,2-.I.trans./I.-acetates derived from .I.N./I.-phthaloyl-protected D-hexosamines is presented. Anomerisation of the corresponding 1,2-.I.cis./I.-acetates and direct conversion of all of them to 1,2-.I.trans./I.-ethyl 1-thioglycosides are also described and discussed.
