The cell line ECV 304, previously considered to be a spontaneously transformed human endothelial cell line of umbilical vein origin, was determined by Brown et al. in Lab. Invest. 80 (2000), 37-45, to be actually the cell line T24/83 derived from human urinary bladder carcinoma, as shown by DNA fingerprinting. The problems of cross-contamination of cell linesare discussed, together with the problems of obtaining, characterization, maintenance and utilization of cell lines in culture.
