The present invention provides a method for increasing the adsorption ability of an inorganic adsorbent material for adsorbing one or more selected solute species from a gas-phase or from a liquid-phase, the inorganic adsorbent material being doped with one or more suitable dopants. Alternative embodiments of the present invention comprise the application of various doping techniques such as doping with metals in finely divided form, with organo-metallic compounds and complexes, with precipitation salts and pore structuring by doping.
