The nitric oxide density is the main ionized component of the lower ionosphere. With the use of radio wave absorption observations and model calculations, it was shown that the NO asymmetry, observed by satellites for sunset and sunrise, does exists throughout the sunlit period and it is the reason of the observed strong diurnal asymmetry in absorption in summer. This asymmetry is absent in winter.
