The active pool of cytokinins (CKs) in plant cells is regulated at different levels including their biosynthesis, metabolic interconversions, inactivation and degradation, as well as uptake from and secretion to cell exterior, respectively. Irreversible metabolic degradation of isoprenoid CKs bearing unsaturated and non-glycosylated side chain is specifically catalysed by CK oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX, EC 1.5.99.12, previously classified as EC 1.4.3.6). Although an impressive progress in CKX research including the cloning and expression of the ckx genes has been achieved in recent years [1-5], little is still known about the regulation of CKX activity in plants.
