Unlike in many other European countries, brown bear was never exterminated in Slovakia. The lowest population number was 20 individuals in 1932. Following a hunting ban population recovered by 5-10% per year. Hunting was resumed in 1962, when the population number reached the expected carrying capacity ů 300-400 individuals. Preference of largest, most valuable trophy bears has led to changes in age and sex population structure. Consequently, population numbers further increased to 800-1200 individuals. No human was killed by a bear over the last 50 years despite increasing population density and thus greatening chances for account. Human-bear conflicts should be prevented by following discipline rules in protecting areas, guarding grazing herds of domestic animals, and removal of trash from recreational centers.
