When interpreting electron images of fragments of historical paintings we have found three aspects as the most useful for the description of painting materials and technologies:(i) chemical contrast involving a detection of thin or fragmental layers a distinction between isochromatic pigments, (ii) particle size and morphology involving to characterise sources and preparation of the material and (iii) electron microprobe analyses involving to identify pigments admixed even in very low concentration.
