Gas flow patterns in the atomizer were studied by light scattering on ammonium chloride particles. The flow pattern is basically laminar. Longitudinal free atom distribution in the atomizer optical tube under various conditions was measured. Free atoms start to decay immediately after entering the optical tube. Enhanced free atom decay at higher analyte concentrations deteriorates the calibration linearity. Free atoms may appear at the borders of the hot part, contributing to the sensitivity.
