The gender differences in personality traits, which were measured using the Czech version of The NEO-PI-R in two age groups of subjects (adolescent and adults) in self- and peer- rating, was presented (N =956 self-rating, 822 peer-rating). The mean z score difference between females and males were computed, t-tests were used to compare the means for men and women. Women score statistically significant higher in the facets of Neuroticism and Agreeableness. Women are higher than men in Warmth and Gregariousness, but lower in Assertiveness and Excitement seeking. Women scored higher than men in Openness to Aesthetics, Feelings and Actions, but lower in Openness to Ideas. These findings are consistent with gender stereotypes that associate women with feelings, submissiveness and nurturing and men with thinking, dominance and competitiveness. The most important finding is that observers see the same gender differences in the adult sample. Gender differences are largest in peer-reported personality traits. The magnitude of gender differences varied across both age groups. Gender differences are more pronounced between girls and boys than between women and men, especially for the Openness to Experience domains. Girls do not differ from boys in Assertiveness and Openness to Ideas (the same was confirmed in the peer-rating data).
