Total and abiotic P-uptake rates and P-uptake capacities of seston suspended in the water column and of entrapped settling seston were investigated during one seasonal cycle in the moderately eutrophic reservoir. The objective of this study was to find if the settling seston is a sink or a source of dissolved orthophosphate. The P-uptake was measured by a radioactive method with carrier-free 33P-labelled orthophosphate. It was found that biotic P-uptake prevails in the epilimnion and upper metalimnion during the summer months when dissolved reactive phosphorus concentrations and sestonic C:P ratios indicates P-deficiency of phytoplankton. Abiotic processes are dominant in the lower layers, where P-uptake rates and capacities are low, but always positive. It was suggested that settling seston possesses biotic P-uptake in all P-limited lakes and this accounts for the decrease of sestonic C:P ratios with depth.
