We analysed early-spring ciliate peak following winter stratification in an artificially divided bog lake Grosse Fuchskuhle, Brandenburg, Germany. The maximum ciliate biomass and numbers (660 and 990 micro g(C)/l and 290 and 260 cells/ml in the respective basins) were reached in the surface layer during the ice melting; then they continuously decreased. Algivorous prostomatids Urotricha spp. numerically dominated; in the biomass prevailed a mixotrophic oligotrich, Pelagostrombidium mirabile (up to 940 micro g(C C)/l). Directly measured uptake rates on bacteria showed that the mixotrophs were not nutritionally dependent on bacterivory; however, the feeding upon nanoplankton was very likely as well . The oligotrich uptake rate (up to 670 bacteria/cil.h) significantly contributed to the overall bacteria mortality but the maximum community feeding rate of over 200 bacteria/cil.h was reached along with an increasing contribution of scuticociliates paralleled by a drop of the oligotrichs.
