Common graptolite rhabdosomes assigned to the late Ordovician zonal index species Normalograptus ojsuensis are recorded from the upper part of the Punta Arenas Member of the Rio San Marco Formation. They provide biostratigraphical evidence for the previous assumption that at least the upper part of the Punta Arenas member is Rawtheyan/Hirnantian or early Hirnantian in age. The present graptolite material refers the upper part of the Punta Arenas Member to the early Hirnantian extraordinarius - ojsuensis Biozone. The Hirnantian age of the succeding Cuccuruneddu Member has already been established by the presence of an Hirnantia Fauna and glacio-marine diamictites.
