The effect of acute (1 week) and chronic (8 weeks) phase of diabetes mellitus (DM) on susceptibility to ischemia/reperfusion injury was investigated in adult rats. In acute phase of DM, diabetic heart are more resistant to irreversible cell damage, whereas in the chronic phase they exhibit reduced susceptibility to arrhythmias. These discrepencies might reflect different pathogenesis of arrhythmias and myocardial infarction.
