Developmental changes in the spatial arrangement of peritubular vessels of the chick mesonephros at embryonic days 5 and 7 were studied by 3-D reconstruction of images captured by a confocal laser scanning microscopy. Specimens were fixed, embedded and cut into transversal physical sections 30 40 microm thick. Digitized contours of the mesonephric surface, vessels and other structural components were converted into 3-D greyscale images. These were interactively registered and put together. The 3-D reconstruction of vascular bed revealed that blood vessels in the 5-day embryos were arranged segmentally and alternated with tubules situated perpendicularly to the long axis. In parallel to the intensive growth of tubules in length and due to the appearance of numerous infoldings in their course during the further development up to day 7, it was demonstrated, that their blood supply transformed from the segmental to the network-like one, i.e. to the network of capillaries occupying peritubular spaces.
