Data summarized in this paper indicate that changes of the melatoninrhythm in rats reflect mostly changes of the intrinsic rhythmicitywithin the suprachiasmatic nucleus where the master circadian clockresides. If there is an time-keeping mechanism in the rat pineal,it is only a marginal one.
