The paper considers the question why anyone might wish to oppose metaphysics, why anyone might want to claim, like Wittgenstein, that metaphysics "leads the philosopher into complete darkness". It reaches the conclusion that the kind of metaphysics we should depreciate - together with the later Wittgenstein - is the product of the illusion that we philosophers can get hold of some entities which are tractable in the rigorous, 'mathematical' vein while at the same time being factual and hence directly relevant for our lives; that philosophy could 'calculate' truths of the real world.
