Fabrication of long-period gratings /LPGs/ in optical fibers by focused beams of CO₂ lasers and the interaction of laser beam with fiber are reported. The LPGs were fabricated in two types of single-mode fibers under different laser powers and velocities of scanning of the laser beam across the fiber. Transmission spectra of the fabricated LPGs with different grating period are shown. Effect of optical damage of the fibers caused by laser beam on the LPG transmission spectra is also discussed.
