The Mediterranean Gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) is known by its circum-Mediterranean wide distribution. It occurs from Morocco and Iberian Peninsula in the west as far as the Middle East. Recently, it has been found that the Mediterranean Gecko has an unusually low genetic variation all around the Mediterranean coast. We showed in our study that the situation is different in the inland of the Levant region, where the gecko possesses surprisingly high genetic variation and differentiation. It shows the region to be original for the species, the centre of the radiation from where the geckos spread across the whole Mediterranean in the recent period presumably due to the human activities.

Gekon turecký (Hemidactylus turcicus) je znám svým širokým rozšířením přes celou Středozemní oblast. Vyskytuje se od Maroka a Iberského poloostrova na západě až po Blízký východ. Teprve nedávno bylo zjištěno, že tento gekon má na celém svém areálu podél pobřeží Středozemního moře neobvykle nízkou genetickou variabilitu. V naší studii jsme ukázali, že tomu tak není ve vnitrozemí levantské oblasti, kde tento gekon naopak na relativně malém území nabývá překvapivě velké genetické rozmanitosti. To ukazuje, že tato oblast je pro tento druh původní, odkud se rozšířil po celém mediteránním pobřeží až v recentní době pravděpodobně přičiněním člověka.
