Goldfish is pan-globally distributed and well known to everybody. Goldfish is maybe the most important pet fish and lab fish of the world. All varieties are traditionally considered to be Carassius auratus, a species that was described by Linnaeus on the basis of a red coloured specimen with trilobed caudal fin. Despite the wide phenotypic variability of the ornamental forms they are generally considered to represent a monophyletic lineage that due to domestication developed out of the Silver Prussian carp, C. gibelio. However, this monophyly has never been proven, and since C. gibelio has a vast area of distribution across most of Eurasia, multiple domestication events may have occurred, like it has recently been discovered in cattle and dogs. Another unsolved problem with the goldfish is its phylogenetic position within the genus Carassius, since also the sister-relationship between C. auratus and C. gibelio has never been proven. Here we present the results of a reconstructed genealogy of 46 individuals of the genus Carassius based on unique sequences of mitochondrial gene cytochrome b. The samples originated from different parts of Eurasia and included different varieties of domesticated fancy goldfish as well as feral populations and specimens of other representatives of the genus Carassius. Despite of substantial morphological variability among the sampled individuals, the analyses of sequence of mitochondrial gene cytochrome b have shown no significant differences among haplotypes of fancy goldfish. Individuals from European feral populations of goldfish formed one clade with fancy varieties of C. auratus and did not show significant genetic differences. This indicates that all goldfish form a monophyletic lineage; indicating that the origin of all ornamental goldfish was a single domesticated event. The clade of C. auratus includes also individuals from the area of Yangtze River basin. Interestingly, this area has already been considered on the basis of historic records as the area where Goldfish domestication began.

Vzorky pochazejı z ruznych casti Eurasie a zahrnujı ruzne variety domestıkovane zlate rybky stejne jako jejı zdıvocele populace a dalsı zastupce rodu genus Carassius. Jedınci z evropskychferalnich populaci zlate rybky tvorili jeden klad s domestıkovanymi varıetami C. auratus a neukazaly sıgnıfikantni geneticke rozdily. Nase studie vypovida o zrejme monofyletıckem puvodu ornamentalnich zlatych rybek a o jednom hıstorickem. Klad C. auratus zahrnuje take jedince z oblastı reky Yangtze.
