Na základě „úvodů“ do historické antropologie, která se na tento koncept odvolává, se v článku analyzují způsoby, jak v diskursu historické antropologie funguje kategorie genderu. Topika i argumentace historickoantropologických analýz se odvíjí na jedné straně převážně na půdorysu emancipačního paradigmatu a pracuje s kategorií „pohlavní specifičnosti“ (internalizovaného pohlavního řádu chápaného jako kvazibiologická struktura). Na druhé straně se i v rámci historické antropologie objevují texty pracující s genderem jako analytickou kategorií, které narušují představu o objektivním, neutrálním a univerzálním nároku historické vědy a subvertují předpoklady a kategorie historické antropologie jako disciplíny (např. kategorii zkušenosti).

Focusing on the most known „Introductions“ to historical anthroropology, the author analyses the ways how the category of gender works in discourses of historical anthropology. Their figurative speech and argumentation refer mostly to an „emancipation paradigm“ and operate with a German term „gechlechtsspezifisch“, i.e. „specific to each of sexes“. This category is usually interpreted as an internalisation of quasi-biological „order of sexes“ („Geschlechtsordnung“) in the early modern period. However, within the framework of the German-speaking historical anthropology there is also a number of papers operationalizing gender as an analytical category. In doing so, they not only challenge claims on neutrality, objectivity or universalism of the historical science but also subvert premises and the very fundamental of the historical anthropology itself (e.g. the category of experience).
